Laser Dentistry: What It Treats and Why It Hurts Less

BGZ Dental Turkey3 min read

Laser light is non-ionising and doesn't accumulate in tissue the way X-rays can. Used at the correct wavelength and dose, it's safe for essentially every patient, including those who are pregnant, children, and patients with cardiac conditions.

What Can Laser Dentistry Treat?

  • Dental implants: improves surgical success rates and reduces the pain and swelling that can follow surgery.
  • Smile design: used for gum-line symmetry ("pink aesthetics") in cosmetic dentistry.
  • Fillings: reduces pain and complications while preparing the cavity, often removing the need for anaesthesia altogether.
  • Teeth whitening: an Er:YAG laser can whiten teeth without generating heat, avoiding the sensitivity that can come with other whitening methods.
  • Impacted tooth extraction: loosens the tooth beforehand — laser-assisted extractions are associated with around 20% less pain and swelling.
  • Gum disease: treats gingival disease without the need for surgery.
  • Root canal treatment: lowers complication risk, improves success rates, and helps disinfect the canal.
  • Provides fast relief for tooth sensitivity.
  • Treats oral herpes (cold sores) and aphthous ulcers (canker sores).
